Hell On Earth

Another day, hip hip hooray,
More hell on earth for me.
It’s freezing cold out here today,
This can should keep me thawed.
I’m snuggled up in someone’s hedge.
Tired, don’t want to move.
But need to go and make some bread
Before this family rise and shine.
My brighter days were close to theirs,
When ale was real and food was fine.
But now I only drink this shit,
It’s special brew and cheapo wine.
I stumble down these restless streets
And catch petruding eyes on mine.
Eyes that stare and scoff and spit.
Eyes that couldn’t give a shit.

At half past two I meet my friends
(If one can really call them that!)
Less frequently than I do now
Should one arrange to meet these folk.
I’ll leave these rats, forgive my wife,
Then find a home, and live my life.
They’re not like me, they come from hell.
To Lucifer, the best of chums.
But liquid mirrors on the deck
Remind me – we’re all bums.
Most places won’t employ my type,
I leave the town and take a roam.
With tear-filled eyes and frost-bit nose,
I limp to find my short-term home.
