Rock and Roll the Early Years
Written by Martyn Wiley
Faintly glamorous once
white macs and cupped cigarettes
and her with her beehive
and him with his quaff
slouching to the early bus
Then there were kids
too many for the house
and she lost her teeth
and he went out of fashion
Now, a car in the garden
their youngest in DC
and their lantern jawed lass
stuck to the settee
all waiting for Glenn
the one who did best
the one with the wife
and three wheeler
who always calls Wednesdays
to watch some telly
and take the old man
out for a drink
in a pub
where they sit silent
side by side
and staring ahead
as the juke box plays
rock and roll.
