Ballad of the Bonfire

The night is here, the bonfire‘s made
and tightly wrapped we wait.
For once alight, the fiery tongue
will snarl at rapid rate.

Though bound for Flanders, Fawkes was found;
gave Johnson as his name.
As for the owner of the barrels
Sir Percy got the blame.

As the sparklers fairy dance
the fireworks reach great heights
Bang! They burst then shower down
as bright and coloured lights.

Fawkes was taken to the tower
he suffered the Little Ease[1].
Four days past, he named the men
Rookwood, Wintour, Keyes.

The bonfire chokes and slowly dies
November the fifth; asleep.
Fawkes had died for Catholic cause
and the day is his to keep.

[1] The Little Ease was a cell so small that the prisoner inside was incapable of being comfortable sitting, standing or lying.  Fawkes was apparently put in this cell as way of torture to make him reveal the names of his co-conspirators.
